Churches & Chapels in Pelion |
|
Here I am again to show you the homes of God in Pelion. God lives at the hearts of the people who live in this amazing beauty's place and a way to show Him their appreciation for whatever He offer to them, they have build wonderful churches and chapels to honor Him. |
|
| At the Makrinitsa village a church that was built on 1806 a.c. is the gem of the "Balcony of Pelion". It is a tiny church but it fits so well at the natural architecture design of the village and adorns the area. |
|
| A nativity scene looks so beautiful and so different inside the cavity of the ancient plane tree very close to the church of Makrinitsa. |
|
| The church in Hania has the altitude of the place graven at the stone at its campanile and looks lovely among the snow that exist most of the winter time at the village. |
|
| Let's pay a visit now in one of the most beaustifull villages of Pelion, Tsagkarada and let's discover together its wonderful churches and the huge methuselah trees that lives there.
Tsagkarada is a large, sprawling village built on the slopes of three long ridges that are covered by a dense forest of chestnut and plane trees, interspersed with orchards of many fruit trees and floral gardens, which explains why it is also lovingly called “The Green Sea” by its many fans. From its altitude it commands panoramic views over the Aegean Sea and the surrounding landscapes of unexampled natural beauty. It is also endowed with two beaches of unparalleled charm, a maze of cobbled alleys and mule-tracks waiting to be discovered and explored, and with many traditional stone houses and old mansions that betoken its long history and tradition. |

Don't forget to visit the four community squares of the village where you will find the old churches under the protective shade of most impressive plane trees. At Agia Paraskevi you will have the opportunity to admire one of the Tsagarada landmarks, namely, the majestic 1000-year-old plane tree with a circumference of 14 meters, and at Agii Taxiarhes another one, 800 years old with a circumference of 17.5 meters. Both trees grow on a natural spring, and under them there is an old marble fountain with cold water of excellent flavor and quality.
I posed in front of the 1000-year-old plane tree because this picture will remind me at the future how small I felt in front of it. I look like a small blue spot in front of the huge giant. Imagine this giant when it will have all its leaves a few months later when spring will come and the green will decorate the mountain of Centaurs. |

| The 1000 years tree is standing there as a speechless witness of the long history that has written around it. Imagine the generations that grow up and played under his shadow, the babies who came to baptize at the church, attended at the liturgies married at the church and returned as earth to the earth after their funeral ceremony at the church of Agia (Saint) Paraskevi. 1000 years... so many cycles of lives and the tree is still there... still alive and beautiful but with a small column from stones that people build for it, as a support to help it stay in upright stance and be proud for many years more. |

| At Milies, there is a church of the holy Archangels, in the square which contain a noteworthy wood carved iconostasis and frescoes of the 18th century. |
|
| You could feel the presence of God in a place like this. This ancient church is not too big and you can not imagine how big looks when you enter inside it. The icons, the colors, the light of the candles... the all atmosphere offers the soul's uplift. You stand there but you don't touch the land. Your soul flies up to meet and bless the Creator of everything, the Master of Love. |

| Staying in Volos the first night of our arriving at the area we decided to walk a little bit and be familiar with the city. That night our path drove us outside the church of Agios (Saint) Nicolaos. A few days after the Christmas celebration, at a sweet winter night this church called us and we replied in this invitation with a small visit and a few candles we lit in it... some candles and a pray for our loved persons we have missed and we will always remember the happy days of Christmas. I, my father and my aunt lit our candles and we prayed to God for the repose of the soul of my mother who passed away at the Christmas Day 7 years ago and the soul of my uncle Nicos who was drowned 10 years ago. |

I don't consider myself as a religious person but... I believe to God, our creator, our protector and our consolation. I can see and distinguish God everywhere. I don't need a specific place to honor him as I have Him always in my heart but I like to be in places that a lot of people use to pray to Him. Those places keep a huge amount of energy that emit during the prayers of those people who believe that their Lord is there and they can talk to Him.
I have placed here some of the churches that impressed me at this trip but I am going to finish this blog with the small prayer that a woman offered to the church of Agia (Saint) Paraskevi at Tsagkarada. It is a handmade canvas work and has been embroidered by Ms. Olda Adraka on 1908, 100 years ago.
Where faith is, there is love
Where love is, there is peace
Where peace is, there is blessing
Where blessing is, there is God
Where God is, there is no need.
