A summer weekend in Samos

The temperature has climped high this weekend... more than 40 C in Greece and will stay there for the next week. So... at my blog today I will try to offer some cool moments I lived in my island the last weekend.

I traveled last weekend... as most of my weekends but this time my trip was different. I made a short trip to my island... my paradise, my birthplace, my Samos!

I have written many blogs for my paradise and I am going to write more at the future as this place is a dream place with great history which goes thousand years back.

With an area of 476 sq. klms, a coastline of 159 klms, and a population of approx 42.000 inhabitants this island is situated very near the coastline of Asia Minor, from which it is separated by multileveled strait of approx.1300 meters in width. The highest mountains of the Aegean are found in Samos, some of which are, the mountain range of Kerkis, with an altitude of 1434 meters, which due to the many ravines and concealed slopes is inaccessible. Mount Karbounis at the center of the island, with an altitude of 1160 meters and followed by the offshoots of Chondros, Kaprovouni, Bournias and Thio.
I have born in this island and here I have learned to love the sea and the nature. I feel so lucky to be part of this place, to have a home there, to feel it as my home land.

I arrived in Samos on Saturday early at the morning. My best friend and "koumpara" Angela was at the airport waiting to welcome me. For those of my friends who follow my blogs at the last year Angela is a well known person of my life. I am proud and honored to have her friendship for almost 40 years and I was very happy to be the sponsor and first of honour at her weeding last December (2006).

After the long morning coffee at the her home we went at the beach close to Karlovasi, our city. We spend a lot of time at Potami, one of the more beautiful beaches of the island.

Saturday night... a hot night! I spent the night with Angela and Giota, my aunt, at Kokkari, a small village which collects thousands of tourists from all over the world. As you could see at the photo the night there is different. Many small cafe-bars are there, beside the sea and a lot of lazy people enjoy the summer night sky smelling and feeling the touch of the sea. I believe the photo could talk more about the wonderful time I had in Kokkari.
Sunday morning and we woke up early to travel at the south part of the island to visit one more beautiful beach of the island. Votsalakia beach, a quite long beach with crystal clear water.
Angela and her son, Stavros swimming at the totally transparent sea. The water was cool and as the temperature was really high we stayed inside the sea a lot of time.
Fotini and Angela inside the cool water. A scene so familiar to both of us. We have grown up spending most of our summer time in this sea... at the Aegean sea waters. I use to say that we, the islanders, have blood that is salted from the long time we spend inside this sea.
We were not alone at this beach. Around us people talking in many different languages. A puzzle of cultures enjoy the wonderful beach. The mountain at the background of the photo is the highest of the two that covers the center of the island and its name is male... it is our "Kerkis", the tallest mountain in the Aegean with a view towards the Cyclades and Dodecanese which is unbelievable and at the same time fascinating.

My weekend was perfect but it has passed so fast...

My mind have stayed in this beach as only my body is has been taken back at the capital. I will be back in Samos after a month and I will spend 3 weeks of my vacation there. I am going to walk and swim again at this beach which looks that it has not limits. It is there... waiting me and my friends.

So... prepare your luggage for Samos!!!
