A village at the mountain Kerkis |
Samos again in my blog... I am ready to travel again in Samos during this weekend. Tomorrow morning I will drink my morning coffee there. I will smell the island's air... the breath of the Aegean Sea... the mountain's wind.
Before prepare my suitcases for the paradise let me show you a different view of Samos. Let me present you one of the mountains of Samos. Kerkis... the higher mountain of the island and a small village, Drakaioi, which is been overhang from it, are in front of you at this blog. Enjoy it! |
It was a trip we did with my friend Angela on a Saturday morning at the island. I had many years to visit a village at the mountain Kerkis of Samos.
I believe when you think about the Aegean islands you have something different at your minds. Well... Samos is a different island. It is a green island with 2 mountains and amazing beauty of the nature. The beaches usually attract the tourists who come here to rest but if you have time to explore it you will discover why I call it a paradise. |
| Traveling at the mountain we stopped many times just to look around and enjoy the nice view. We smelled the pleasant breeze of the mountain and the scent that came from the herbs. We stopped to collect also green mountain tea, the samian "Alisfakia" which we like to drink during winter. It offers a cure at the throat which has been in pain during a cold. |
| We reached our destination, the village Drakaioi and a different world was in front of our eyes. The tall window with the flower pot and the small butterfly which tried to absorb the nectar of the flowers was my first impression. Scenes we forget at the speed of the big city's life. |
| These houses are not expensive. The villagers don't have a lot of money to build modern houses with the last trend furnitures but they build their home which is more pretty that any other palace because it has been build with their hands and decorated with the most expensive decorations, the flowers of the mountain. Nature is the only decoration here and as you could see at the photo it offers beauty everywhere. |
| Imagine how calm are the villagers who live here. No speeding here. The rhythm of life changes the view that we could see life. Imagine the characters of the kids who are raised here and are free to play and run at the small pathways of the village. Compare them with the kids who are grown up at the large city's apartments. |
| The villagers love the tourists. They enjoy seeing them visiting their village and their hospitality is famous in all the Aegean area. They are poor people but their village is so clean and everywhere the smell of flowers that comes from the small gardens makes you feel like you are at the richest place of the world. |
| The widow women at the village are dressed in black for the rest of their life. They keep the sorrow from the lost of their husband for the rest of their life. The old lady is ready to knock the door of the neighboring house. When they have free time they use to share their coffee, enjoy the gossips that circulated among them and let the time to pass. Summers, autumns, spring and winters are passing slow here. |
| The church of the village is located at the center of the village. It is the place for the happiest and the most sadden moments of the life at this village. A place that God is present and offers the relief that need... the support they seek to continue the struggle for the survival. |
| The men of the village spend a lot of time at the small cafe of the village, the :"Kafenio". Women don't use to come here. They prefer to have their coffee at their homes. The time at the cafe is the privilege of the men at this small society of the village. |
| At the kafenio you can find many strange and some times eccentric men of the village. Too much of their time is spending here... doing nothing... just resting. Well... the women work more here as they must be at the home and at the fields. |
| At the small cafe the priest of the village helps his wife who is the owner of the cafe serving the couple of tourists who explore the area and visit the small village. Another scene that I am sure you don't use to see often. |
| My coffee is ready and my cup looks like me at the mornings when I haven't drunk my coffee. This kind of coffee is the "Greek coffee". With this name you could ask it in Greece. Don't forget to taste it.
At the small house of the village the old ladies use to try reading the future at the signs that coffee leave at the cup of the coffee. |
| Angela and I at the small village enjoying our coffee at the small kafenio of the priest. Happy moments which stay at my memory and bright my life... |
| Kids at the playground… they play under the huge platan at the center of the village. This is a poor simple playground but offers so much fun time to them. |
Boats you can find at the mountain too. Small factories which build boats from the famous wood of the samian pine are present in some of the villages of the island. Samian boats are famous from the ancient years. The samian pine trees have a wood which is very tough and resistant at the sea water and the art of building boats are one of the tradition jobs at the island.

It was a trip at the mountain of Kerkis ... a trip in a non tourist place of Samos . This small village is one of the 50 which have been spread around the island beside the sea or up... at the high altitude of the 2 mountains of the island.
I hope you enjoy one more time a different face of this amazing and beautiful island... Fotini's paradise! |
