A flag to cover the souls

It was Sunday a few years ago when my daughter and I visited the studio of the Sunday TV show “Poli tin Kiriaki”, a broadcast of the Mega Channel, one of the biggest TV channels in Greece and one of the channels that the Greeks who live abroad can watch at their cable or satellite TV.

It wasn't the first time I invited to be a part of a TV brodcast. I have given interviews two times for TV shows. At the first time it was an interview about the Theological School of Halki and the way that Hellenic Electronic Center, a non profit non governmental organization, had chosen to educate the world preparing a petition by internet for the reopening of this school. I gave that interview as member of this organization. I do volunteering work for this organization offering my knowledge as graphic artist and web designer. I gave the interview for the Greek Channel at the Canadian cable TV.

At the second time, an interview again for ERT3, a Greek channel that broadcasts inside and outside Greece. The purpose of the inerview was the use of internet as a media in order to join the Greeks who live all over the world . It was Christmas broadcasting that I have never had the opportunity to watch it. I face everything as an experience in this life and I like to test myself in everything.

Last night was different. It was a live broadcasting and it was funny to be member of all these people who have been there, some trying to show themselves at the TV monitors and be famous to the people who belong at their social cycle and they know them and some of them just to win gifts from the production. I was there to satisfy my curiosity and spend some time with my busy daughter. Our kids grow very fast, choose their carriers and start move fast to build their life. So fast that some time we realize that they have gone and we miss them.

After the first hour I have started feeling boredom and cold as the studio was too big and without a heating. I had started looking my watch and wondering how I could stay 2 more hours. It was that time that the host of the show announced the first live link with Heraklion, the biggest city in the island of Crete . Crete is the biggest of the Greek islands and is located at the south of Greece.

Crete has a history that starts from Neolithic period (6000 b.c.) and it was the centre of one of the greatest civilizations. The civilization that was developed was named Minoan (3000-1900 b.c.), after the legendary King Minos. A well known myth, the myth of the Minotaur and the Labyrinth has preserved the memory of the unique Minoan civilization until today - a civilization where the bull was worshipped and majestic structures like the Knossos palace existed in all its splendour.
The Cretans are special kind of Greeks. Great warriors, they have never accepted any kind of occupation. Very known at the recent history is the Battle of Crete at World War 2.
Cretans still leave with guns. Guns are part of their existence, their tradition, their culture. They know that they live in one of the most beautiful places in the world and they want to be ready anytime to fight for the freedom of their island.
Yes… Cretans are a special breed of men and women…

At the yesterday live broadcast, at the harbour of Heraklion, thousands of Cretans danced the time that the biggest in the world flag raised at the night Greek sky. A Greek flag that is going to be at the Guiness book as its surface is 735,5 square meters.
It was something unbelievable to see all this happening at the video wall of the studio. A great moment…
We all feel this kind of creep when we see our flag raising but what made me feel that I spiritually raised the same moment at that sky was the phrase that the man who made that flag told at the host of the program.

He said: “I made this Greek flag to be so big in order to cover all the Greek souls all over the world” .
That phrase touched my soul and I will never forget it.

At the modern times we live and under the globalization ideas that every day bombards us, we have forgot who we are. We raise our children show them that they have to run for the success and the success is the money.
Money needs to cover our needs… but what needs?
What we do for the needs of their souls?

A flag is a piece of fabric but represents the ideal. The flag in our soul makes us to feel different, makes us to be proud for our origin.

I have lived in many places inside and outside Greece. I felt more Greek when I was far away from my country.
Those years when I tried to be a member of a foreign social community I realized that I missed my country and I felt lucky for the legacy that this ancestry offers to me. I have born Greek… I am proud to be a Greek…

My soul will be always a Greek soul in whatever place I am going to live in the future .

That is why you can find better Greeks outside Greece. I met them as Cyprians, as Canadians, as Americans and much other citizenship. They are the best members of their social society offering a lot and gaining respect and recognition by it but deep inside them they are Greek souls. Some of them have never visited Greece as they have been born abroad and they are second, third or older generation Greeks but when they speak about Greece about Greek history and culture their faces change. Their faces getting brighter…
Yes, they are Greek souls.

Yes…that Greek huge flag is made for them… to cover their souls... to cover our souls…
